Spring and cable replacement

Garage door spring replacement in Brisbane.

Springs do the heavy lifting on a sectional door. When one breaks, the motor is suddenly trying to lift the full weight of the door on its own, and the door becomes dangerous to operate by hand.

  • Torsion springs and lift cables replaced as a matched system
  • Springs sized to the weight and cycle life of your door
  • Never a DIY job, and never worth the risk

Signs of a broken spring

How to tell a spring has gone.

A broken spring is one of the few garage door faults that is genuinely easy to identify from the ground.

See emergency repairs

A loud bang from the garage
Often heard at night or when nobody is in the room. A torsion spring releasing its tension is unmistakably loud.
A visible gap in the spring
Look at the shaft above the door. A broken torsion spring shows a clear separation where the coil has parted.
The door will not lift
The motor hums, strains, moves the door a few centimetres or trips out entirely because the counterbalance is gone.
The door is extremely heavy
Disconnected from the opener, a door with a broken spring can weigh well over a hundred kilograms. Do not try to lift it.
The door drops when released
Without spring support, nothing is holding the door up. This is the fault that causes crush injuries.
Frayed or slack cables
Cables and springs work together. A broken spring often takes a cable with it, or reveals cables already worn.

Safety first

Why spring work is not a DIY job.

A torsion spring stores enough energy to lift a door weighing more than most motorbikes. Released without control, it does not let go gently.

  • Do not attempt to unwind, adjust or replace a torsion spring. The winding bars must be under control at all times.
  • Do not operate the opener with a broken spring. You will burn out the motor or bend the door.
  • Do not lift the door by hand to get a car out. Without spring support the door can fall.
  • Keep children and pets out of the garage until the door has been repaired.
  • Replace springs in pairs where the door has two. A new spring beside a tired one fails again quickly.

How a spring replacement runs

Sized, fitted and balanced.

Springs are not generic. Wire size, inside diameter, length and wind direction all have to match the door.

  1. Identify the door

The door weight, size and existing spring configuration determine what needs to be fitted.

  2. Remove under control

T3 Garage Doors winds the remaining tension out with proper winding bars before removing anything.

  3. Fit matched springs

New springs and, where needed, cables are installed as a set so the counterbalance is even.

  4. Balance and test

T3 Garage Doors balances the door by hand, resets the opener force and retests the safety reversal.

A repair worth getting right the first time.

Correctly sized springs give the door its cycle life back. Undersized ones fail early and take cables and openers with them.

Spring replacement questions.

Safety, cost and how long a new spring should last.

Can T3 Garage Doors replace a broken garage door spring?
Yes. T3 Garage Doors replaces torsion springs and cables for different door sizes and styles. Springs are under extreme tension, so do not attempt a DIY repair.
How long does a garage door spring last?
Springs are rated in cycles rather than years, so life depends on how often the door is used. A door opened several times a day will wear its springs faster than one used occasionally.
Should both springs be replaced at once?
On a two-spring door, yes. The second spring has done the same work as the one that broke, so replacing both avoids a repeat call-out and keeps the counterbalance even.
Can I still use the door with a broken spring?
No. Operating the opener with a broken spring can damage the motor and the door, and lifting the door by hand is dangerous because nothing is holding its weight.
Do you replace cables as well?
Yes. Cables and springs work as a system, and a broken spring often damages or reveals worn cables. T3 Garage Doors will inspect both and explain what needs replacing.

Broken spring? Call first.

A door with a broken spring should not be operated, so a phone call is the quickest way to sort it. The form reaches T3 Garage Doors directly if you prefer.

What sort of door is it?

Choose the closest match. A sectional or panel lift door has hinged horizontal panels. A roller door rolls into a drum above the opening.
